DescriptionThis circular copper button features the florid script monogram "G W" in the center, surrounded with stamped letters, "LONG LIVE THE PRESIDENT." The outer design is comprised of linked ovals, each bearing an abbreviation of one of the original thirteen colonies: "NH" (New Hampshire), "M" (Massachusetts), "RI" (Rhode Island), "C" (Connecticut), "NY" (New York), "NJ" (New Jersey), "P" (Pennsylvania), "D" (Delaware), "M" (Maryland), "V" (Virginia), "NC" (North Carolina), "SC" (South Carolina), and "G" (Georgia).
Curatorial RemarksOn April 30th, 1789, George Washington made history, becoming the first president of the United States. Soon after being sworn in, George Washington's inauguration as president inspired enterprising craftsmen to make and sell a variety of commemorative buttons with patriotic designs. NotesThis copper inaugural button is known as the "Linked States Button," as it features the initials of the 13 original states bound by a chain link. The design was first seen on Continental Currency notes issued in 1776.
