DescriptionA large ovoid serving platter with a bright white body. Central portion of the platter features a brightly colored scene with male and female pheasants surrounded by peonies and chrysanthemums. The colors include vivid hot pink, clear orange, bright lime green, and cobalt blue. Brightly colored floral sprays decorate the platter's broad rim. A narrow band of decoration runs along the platter's edges. Some areas of the platter's decoration are picked out in gilt.
Curatorial RemarksSpode is an English brand of pottery produced by the company of the same name, and based in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Spode was founded by Josiah Spode (1733–1797) in 1770. Josiah was recognized for mastering the art of transfer printing in underglaze blue on fine earthenware. In 1813, his son Josiah Spode II perfected a stoneware he called "Stone-China," which more closely resembled Oriental porcelain than any of its predecessors.
