DescriptionA wooden foot warmer with a four sided base, depicting intricate floral and faunal carvings in walnut. The small door has a carved tulip in each corner and a dove perched on a woman's hand in the center. A twisted brass bail handle is attached to the top of the piece.
Curatorial RemarksInspired by Dutch design, early foot warmers, or "foot stoves," held a small earthenware pot which was filled with hot coals or glowing wood. This small personal stove was especially handy for keeping warm on a wagon or sled, or during long Sunday masses in the winter. Foot stoves could even be concealed under a long cloak or skirt.
