DescriptionA man's coat in pale blue and white striped woven cotton. The coat is constructed with a double breasted front with self-covered button closure, exaggerated peak-notched lapels, shaped sleeves, and swallowtail back. Two decorative flap pockets are sewn at the hips, with an additional hidden real pocket on the inside left hip. The jacket is lined with natural colored plain woven linen.
Curatorial RemarksThe lightweight striped fabric and minimal lining indicate this coat was made specifically for summer wear.NotesAccording to the original accession records, this jacket descended within the Taylor family of Middletown. The jacket's last owner was Mary Holmes Taylor III, the final owner of Marlpit Hall in Middletown. She and her brother, Edward, often used old Taylor family clothing of the 18th and early 19th centuries for fancy dress parties. The original owner of this coat was a large man, as the garment was constructed to accomodate a wearer of generous proportions.
