DescriptionA teapot with separate lid in a bulbous body shape. The teapot features an intertwined double handle and a short curved and tapered spout. A band of finely molded basketweave pattern decorates the shoulders. On either side of the vessel is a crest consisting of a blue oval cartouche with three white flowers and a single gilt chevron, above the motto "IN SUBLIME." Above the cartouche is depicted a crowned eagle with outstretched wings. At the handle jointure is a molded and painted acorn and oak leaf in blue with gilt highlights. The flat lid has a simple gilded button knop above a finely molded basketweave banding.
Curatorial RemarksThis teapot, as part of a larger grouping of Chinese Export pieces bearing the "IN SUBLIME" motto, was most likely made for the Continental market towards the end of the eighteenth century.NotesThis teapot was originally from the collection of Mrs. Helena Woolworth McCann, who began assembling her China Trade porcelain collection in the early 20th century. McCann is recognized as one of the premiere American collectors of her day. At her death in 1938, she had amassed approximately 4,000 pieces, including many tea sets and dinner services. Mrs. McCann was in contact with Henry DuPont of Winterthur, Mrs. J. Amory Haskell of Monmouth County, New Jersey, and with noted Portuguese collector Rocardo R. Espirito Santo Silva, who helped her collect porcelains made for the Continental market. After her death, McCann's collection became the property of the Winfield Foundation, which was created in her memory for educational and charitable goals. The Foundation eventually decided to divide Mrs. McCann's collection among 26 museums in the United States and Canada. The Monmouth County Historical Association received 156 pieces from the McCann Collection.
