DescriptionA woman's close-fitting hat, constructed of stiffened green netting over a wire frame. The wire is covered with synthetic emerald green velvet. The entire hat is covered with large floral blossoms resembling roses, peonies, and crysanthemums, all is shades of pink from dark to light, with some smaller molded green paper leaves. On the inside of the lat near the back of the neck is a woven silk tag reading "Franklin Simon Salon."Curatorial RemarksFranklin Simon & Co. was a long-lived specialty department store. Its main headquarters retail store, opened in 1903, was located for many years on Fifth Avenue in New York City. During the first half of the twentieth century, Franklin Simon expanded its retail business to include at least six satellite department stores. J. Howard Denney (1899 - 1975) served as the company's president from 1938 to 1953, when Franklin Simon merged with Oppenheim, Collins & Company. The firm continued in business, using the Franklin Simon name, until at least the 1970s.
