DescriptionThe painting depicts an early farmhouse with outbuildings on a point of land overlooking Sandy Hook Bay with the Hook to the right, and the Narrows in the distance on the left. Numerous sailing vessels can be seen in the bay. The white house with two entrances in the center of the canvas is surrounded by trees and a walk leading to a road which runs in front of the structure. A yard is separated from the road by a picket fence. A barn and another outbuilding can be seen in the lower right corner.
Curatorial RemarksThis monumental painting captures an image of an area that within a few short years was subdivided into streets and heavily built up. Proximity to New York by water and rail made Atlantic Highlands an attractive place in which to live.NotesThe Hooper farm was located on the Bayshore in what is now the Borough of Atlantic Highlands. Sandy Hook and its lighthouse can be seen in the right distance, and the Narrows in the left distance. The house, which appears to date from the 18th century, was built in the Dutch style with two separate front entries and divided doors. In the second half of the 19th century, the farm was owned by Edward Hooper (b. 1822). According to an old label on the reverse, the painting was done by a member of the Hooper family.
