DescriptionView of a farmstead with a gray-painted house to the right. It has a white-painted columned porch, Gothic trim, five dormers, three chimneys, and a shed to its right. To the left of the house is a complex of barns and sheds, including a double corn crib and wagon house painted ochre with a red roof, a smaller wagon house painted ochre with a brown roof, and a large barn beyond them also painted ochre with a brown roof. A small pond with a dam and stream forms the foreground, along with a white-painted rail fence along a driveway that approaches the house from the left. Various trees and bushes in the landscape are just beginning to show spring buds. The sky is depicted as blue with a few white clouds.
Curatorial RemarksThe first of two very similar views of the Senator Hendrickson farm painted two months apart. This one, dated March 1954, depicts a late winter scene. Gulick has added a dam and pond to the landscape, which did not exist at that time. A natural spring provided water for an eighteenth century distillery located to the left of the pond, the remains of which were torn down about 1953. Then owners of the property liked Gulick's pond so much that they created one.NotesThe painting depicts the farm of State Senator William Hendrickson located on the north side of Holland Road in Holmdel, Monmouth County, west of its intersection wtih Laurel Avenue. The view is looking northwest.
