DescriptionThree-quarter view of a five bay, two story shingled church with a three bay gable end, an octagonal cupola over the left gable capped by a conical roof and rooster shaped weather vane, a chimney rising above the center ridge line, four lightning rods along the roof, and an enclosed portico in front of the central doorway. A large three appears to the left of the church, with other trees more distance on both left and right.
Curatorial RemarksExecuted in a straightforward realist manner, this three-quarter view of Old Tennent Church highlights the building’s architectural features, such as its distinctive cupola and shingled façade. The drawing can be dated to the twentieth century by the presence of the portico over the central door. Unlike other depictions of Old Tennent, this artist has chosen to leave out the numerous gravestones that surround the structure.NotesOld Tennent Church in Manalapan Township, Monmouth County, was erected between 1751 and 1753. It figured prominently during the Battle of Monmouth which occurred on 28 June 1778. Old Tennent is one of the best preserved colonial churches in New Jersey.
