DescriptionA pair of off-white silk badges, with coiled metallic thread ribbing at the top and metallic thread fringe edging the bottom. Stamped in very dark blue or black ink, on the ribbons, "N.J. SOCIETY / SONS / OF THE / AMERICAN / REVOLUTION. / MONMOUTH, / JUNE 28th, 1778. / 1778 - 1891." In the center of each ribbon there is a circular design, with a Revolutionary-era soldier and stars. Around the circumference is stamped "NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION / ORGANIZED APRIL 30, 1889," and then in the interior circle, "NEW JERSEY SOCIETY / ORGANIZED MARCH 7, 1889."
NotesThe New Jersey Society was formed on March 7, 1889, as a group that branched off from the New York Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Groups in other states started following suit almost immediately, and on April 30, 1889, the first meeting of the National Society was held at Fraunces Tavern in New York. The first official member of the SAR was William Osborn McDowell, who went on to help form the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1890. The Society carries out projects related to their educational, patriotic, and historic objectives.
