DescriptionAn oval miniature portrait of Susanna Ustick Hartshorne, depicting the sitter in 3/4 view facing right. Susanna, with dark brown eyes and brows, wears her hair fashionably styled a la Grecque, curled with a braid wrapped around her head. The sitter wears a soft loose gown or wrapper with a ruffled edge along the deep V neck and a sash on the high waist. The portrait background is a pale sky blue shading to a dark umber. The portrait sits in a black lacquered wood rectangular frame beneath a glass bezel held in place by a shaped gold rim. The frame retains its original brass hanging loop attached to a brass tab strap.
Curatorial RemarksA portrait of Susanna Ustick Hartshorne's husband, Richard Hartshorne, is owned by the Historical Association (please see accession number 2018.10.5). Richard's portrait is signed by artist Alexander Anderson (1775 - 1870), while Susanna's portrait is unsigned and is clearly by a different artist. It is unknown why the couple did not have portraits done by the same artist. The couple married in
