DescriptionRichard Hartshorne poses in 3/4 view facing right. The sitter has distinctive features, including a lantern jaw and prominent nose. Richard wears his dark hair parted on the side and curled above his ears. Upturned white collar encircles his long neck. He wears a black stock, dark vest, and a dark coat with a black velvet collar. The image rests beneath an elongated octangular mat. The case is lined with cherry colored silk.
NotesRichard Hartshorne was born about 1825, the eldest son of Robert Hartshorne (1798 - 1872) and Mary Ann Minturn (1802 - 1861). He received his education at Bristol College in Pennsylvania (1836), from Rev. G. C. V. Eastman in Old Saybrook and Litchfield, Connecticut (1836 - 1840), and from A. Frost at the Parsonage of Christ Episcopal Church in Shrewsbury, New Jersey (1840). He was employed for many years at Woodhull, Minturn & Co. in New York, of which his uncle Edward Minturn (1806 - 1879) was a principal partner. Richard Hartshorne made an extended visit to Cuba, Louisiana and Galveston, Texas, in 1847 - 1848. He also went south again in 1858. Apparently never in good health, he died unmarried of tuberculosis on 30 January 1867, at the age of 43 years. Just days before his passing, Richard Hartshorne was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church.
