DescriptionA woman's elaborate evening coat constructed with an open front and a deep ruffled cape collar of Irish lace underlined with sheer black chiffon. The coat has long bishop sleeves with deep borders of Irish lace, lined with black chiffon. Four gathered tucks taken at the inside of the sleeve elbows add fullness and draping. The body of the coat is of ivory wool with inserts of lace, lined with black chiffon. The coat is lined with warm ivory wool flannel.
Curatorial RemarksAccording to the donor, this coat was purchased at an estate sale in Rumson in the late 1960s and was apparently part of a large trousseau. Although unlabeled, this evening coat may well be the work of one of the accomplished and highstyle New York City designers, many of whom were patronized by Monmouth County residents.
