DescriptionA miniature or doll's sized sideboard of varnished cedar, possibly American red cedar. The rectangular sideboard features a shaped backsplash with a central medial shelf, one long drawer flanked by two smaller drawers, all above a pair of central doors flanked by two smaller doors, all fitted with small pulls. The sideboard includes a shaped baseboard skirt.
NotesThis charming doll's sideboard was made from the wood of cigar boxes opened and emptied during a celebratory dinner in 1867. Charles Haight (1838-1891) was born in Colts Neck. Admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1861, Haight practiced law in Freehold. From 1862 to 1865, he served as commander of Camp Vredenburgh, the training grounds for local enlisted men during the Civil War. After the war, haight was a state Assemblyman from 1867 to 1871. After the dinner held to celebrate his election, someone - perhaps Haight himself - collected the cigar boxes and made the doll's sideboard for Haight's daughter Annie. After retiring from politics, Haight returned to his law practice and from 1873 to 1891 worked as the Monmouth County prosecutor. He died in 1891 and is buried in Maplewood Cemetery. His daughter Annie Haight Kerfoot donated the sideboard to the Association in 1935.
