DescriptionA small sized quilt with a central Chimney Sweep pattern and double borders of Sawtooth pattern. The central fabric of the Chimney Sweep block is a bold deep blue with lighter blue scrolling and tan linear borders. Sawtooth patches along top and bottom are dark blue spotted, while the other sawtooth scraps are a variety of brown, tan, blue, and red small scale sprigged patterns. The four corner blocks, of red printed fabric, show deterioration, likely due to iron oxide in the original dye. The quilt backing is a single piece of cotton fabric printed in an elaborate stripe of blue, tan, red, and white. The backing is brought forward and turned to create a narrow front binding. The thin cotton batting is held in place with finely quilted outline and straight stitch patterning. In the center of the quilt, the name and date "Ida Tel / 1866" is quilted.
NotesThe quilt was purchased from a Shrewsbury antiques dealer, with the provenance that it descended within a branch of the Hendrickson family of Monmouth County.
