DescriptionA rectangular quilt, hand pieced and quilted, in a Log Cabin variation, of brightly colored and pastel solid and print cottons. The quilt includes a plain white cotton backing and narrow mint green binding, sandwiching a cotton batting. The large stitch quilting is simple outline pattern. On the back, in the upper right corner, is embroidered "D.G. / 1986."Curatorial RemarksAlthough the unknown quiltmaker of this lovely Log Cabin quilt dated it 1986, the design and color palette is firmly rooted in the quilts of the 1920s, 1930s, and early 1940s. The quiltmaker's use of solid and printed cottons, orienting the hues to create soft yet contrasting diagonal movement across her fabric, indicates a highly talented quilter.NotesDonor Elizabeth M. Errickson Walling (1932-2019) was a lifelong Keyport resident. Mrs. Walling worked as a teacher in the East Keyport School for more than forty years. Her father, Edward Errickson (1902-1993) was a Raritan Bay fisherman. Her mother, Theresa "Tressa" C. Shin Errickson, made most of the clothes for her daughters Betty Jane and Elizabeth. Elizabeth Walling noted that the quilts she donated to the Historical Association were all made by a Keyport neighbor, but did not recall the name. Several of the quilts in the donation were embroidered with the initials "D. G." Research is ongoing to identify this unknown but extremely talented Keyport quiltmaker. According to Mrs. Walling, the quiltmaker was an elderly neighbor who had been quilting for many years.
