DescriptionPortrait of a young girl facing left with light brown, curly hair seated in a paint-decorated child's armchair and holding a peach with both hands. She is wearing a white gown with deep square neckline that is gathered at her shoulders with blue bows. A pair of tucks appear above the embroidered band hem. Her face is round and rosy, with pale eyebrows above greenish-blue eyes. Other details include a tortoise comb in her hair, a coral necklace with a gold clasp around her neck, red shoes or slippers, and a bold green and orange patterned carpet on the floor. The baseboard behind the young girl is a light green, with darker green on the walls above it.
Curatorial RemarksThe Association owns pastel portraits by Micah Williams of Rebecca's maternal grandparents, John Stoutenborough and his wife Catherine Holmes, her uncle Dr. Jacobus Hubbard Jr., and later portraits in oil on canvas of her parents by local artist Harvey Jenkins. Williams pastels of her parents Samuel Hubbard and Margaret Stoutenborough are owned privately.NotesArtist Micah Williams captured the likeness of cheerful Rebecca Hubbard (1819 - 1888) some time in 1822, just shy of her third birthday. She was the eldest of six children born to Samuel Hubbard (1779 - 1848) and his wife Margaret Stoutenborough (1794 - 1874). He was a farmer near Red Bank in Middletown Township, Monmouth County.
