DescriptionA candlestand with a fixed circular top held in place with a large batten. It also features a vase-turned shaft, and three cabriole legs that end in small chamfered feet. Decorative notches have been cut in the base of the shaft between the legs. The top is constructed of two pieces of wood held together by a splined joint.
NotesSimple candlestands of this particular form appear frequently among the old families of the Freehold area, Monmouth County. Details that tie the group together are the legs made from boards of uniform thickness that are then chamfered on their upper edge, the articulation of the simple vase-shaped pedestal turning, deep decorative notches in the pedestal base between the legs, and fixed tops that do not swivel or tilt. The maker of this table, who is not presently identified, made economical use of his materials by joining two pieces of wood with a spline to form the top.
