DescriptionA man's bowler style hat of felted black wool, with a rounded crown, straight sides, and a shaped brim with upturned side edges. A wide black grosgrain ribbon encircles the crown, with a flat bow at the side. The hat has a brown leather sweatband sewn into the inside.NotesThis hat belonged to John Mulford Enright. Born on 10 May 1876 in Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey, Enright was the oldest of four children of John Enright (1852 - 1926) and Emma M. Mulford (1853 - 1939). Enright was a lawyer in Jersey City, a senior partner in the firm of McDermott, Enright and Carpenter. He had for a time been a partner of Lindley M. Garrison, secretary of war under Woodrow Wilson, and also served as a director of the Central National Bank in Freehold. Enright married Esther Perry (1888 - 1942) in 1912. Enright's father, John Enright, had been the New Jersey state commissioner of education and at one time served as the superintendent of schools for Monmouth County. John M. Enright died in 1934 and was interred in Maplewood Cemetery in Freehold.
