Curatorial RemarksThe notebook of Bass Otis indicates that he painted portraits of "Mr. and Mrs. Heberton" between November 1825 and February 1826. He charged $40 for the two portraits. Otis had also painted a double portrait of their daughter Margaret Heberton Newkirk and her child, for which he was paid on 8 April 1825.NotesMary Lord Craig was born in Monmouth County, NJ, in 1766, daughter of John Craig and Jane Robinson. She married on 26 February 1786 to George Heberton III, Scottish born son of George Heberton II and Elizabeth Young. They had immigrated to the USA in 1768. Mary Heberton died in Philadelphia on 25 July 1855.
