DescriptionElderly man facing left in a black suit with white shirt and cravat. He is holding a document, and is seated in a red upholstered armchair. Heberton is sporting a most unusual comb-over resembling corn rows.
Curatorial RemarksThe notebook of Bass Otis indicates that he painted portraits of "Mr. and Mrs. Heberton" between November 1825 and February 1826. He charged $40 for the two portraits. Otis had also painted a double portrait of their daughter Margaret Heberton Newkirk and her child, for which he was paid on 8 April 1825.NotesGeorge Heberton III was born on 9 October 1764 in Scotland, son of George Heberton II and Elizabeth Young. They immigrated to the USA in 1768. George III married on 26 February 1786 to Mary Craig of Monmouth County, NJ. He died on 27 May 1826 in Philadelphia, a successful merchant.
