DescriptionMan seated in a red-upholstered chair at a desk, wearing a black suit, white shirt, and black tie. The figure is shown in profile, holding a piece of paper in his left hand and a pen in his right hand. Three books are stacked on the top of the table.
Curatorial RemarksSamuel Hubbard, a Middletown farmer along the Navesink River opposite Red Bank, died the year before Harvey Jenkins appeared in Monmouth County. His portrait is also the only known commission by Jenkins where the sitter is shown in profile. Given these two points, it is likely that the artist was copying posthumously an earlier work, either a profile miniature or a cut-out profile. The painting is cleverly signed in the lower right corner. Hubbard is holding a pen in his right hand, and a piece of paper in his left. Written in script on the paper is “H. Jenk . . .” The Association also owns a companion portrait by Jenkins of Hubbard’s wife, Margaret Stoutenborough, as well as pastel portraits by Micah Williams of their daughter Rebecca Hubbard, and Margaret’s parents John Stoutenborough and Catherine Holmes.
