DescriptionMan facing forward with his body slightly facing left. He is dressed in a black suit, white shirt, and black tie. With full brown hair and beard, he is holding a pen in his left hand. His right arm rests on a red cloth-covered table. Books and a white porcelain inkwell are placed on the table.
Curatorial RemarksThe “Harvey Jenkins” signature in the lower right corner was added by Effie Grover Lum, James Grover’s granddaughter who was also an artist.NotesJames Grover (1796 - 1884), a son of Joseph Grover and Ruth Conover, inherited the 200 acre family farm which was located on Newman Springs Road near where the Garden State Parkway entrance now exists. He married Deborah Voorhees in 1816, and they raised a family of thirteen children. During construction of the Parkway, the historic 18th century Grover House was moved back to a location on West Front Street. It has since been moved again across West Front Street to Stevenson Park, where it has undergone exterior restoration. James Grover died in Shrewsbury in 1884. He was interred beside his wife at Fair View Cemetery in Middletown.
