DescriptionAn unfinished quilt top in a Keystone Pattern variation, straight set in a five by six block arrangement, with sashing and border of a deep olive green small print cotton, all hand sewn. Blocks are a variety of dark/light fabrics, including maroon, red, pale blue and white ground with small floral sprigs, a solid salmon pink glazed cotton, and a bright red and floral twill weave chintz suitable for home upholstery and pillow use.
Curatorial RemarksThis unfinished quilt includes an interesting variety of cotton prints. During the late 19th and very early 20th century, cotton prints featuring tiny floral or geometric repeat patterns were popular for blouses, house dresses, and children's garments. This quilt also includes one fabric that would have been used for home decor. The bright red fabric with bold large scale green, blue, and brown floral bunches is a twill weave, suitable for pillow covers or slip covers for chairs and sofas. The glazed salmon pink cotton is interesting and may date to the third or fourth quarter of the 19th century.
