Curatorial RemarksA second very similar candlestand apparently by the same turner sold on 18 January 2018 at Sotheby's in New York. From the collection of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Schwartz of Paterson, NJ, it was listed as lot 206 in the auction house's Important Americana sale. The Schwartz candlestand had been exhibited in 1971 at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton. It was described but not illustrated in the catalog entitled From Lenape Territory to Royal Province: New Jersey, 1600-1750, (Trenton: New Jersey State Museum, 1971), 64, no. 181. The catalog entry indicated that the stand was from the Hopewell area of Mercer County. While it may well have been owned there, the skilled quality of the pedestal turnings suggests an urban origin for both stands, either New York or Philadelphia.NotesAssociation collection records described this candlestand as follows, "1 Very early candle-stand (Belonged to Boyd Fullerton of near New Brunswick, N. J.)" Boyd Fullerton (1875 - 1951) was a son of the Rev. John Quincy Fullerton (1845 - 1916) and Ella Van Doren (1849 - 1936). Fullerton's mother was descended from some of the leading Dutch families of the greater New Brunswick area, including Van Doren, Voorhees, Suydam, Longstreet (Langstraet), Ditmars, etc.
